The Marawi Siege: Reflections on the Rights of Internally Displaced People

Authors: Dr. Francis Thaise Maria Eliza D Santander, Fiona Mary M Cabrillos and Fritzie B Salado Conflict Resolution, Human Rights, Internally Displaced People (IDPs), Marawi Siege, National Security

Abstract

There are several reasons why the Maranaos are perceived as security risk (Cojuangco 2007) to the country. One main reason is their continuous fight against the government as they push for certain reforms that relate to ancestral land, livelihood, leadership, education, employment, and justice system, among others. The national security implications are not purely religious. Rather, they are socio-cultural, economic, and political in nature that until now has been left unaddressed by the national government. When people feel deprived of basic rights, conflict is most likely to ensue.
